Internship Opportunities
Available
for a New
Ensemble-generated Play
based on a Sufi tale
“The Day the Waters Were
Changed”
Commissioned by
Golden Thread
Productions
by Denmo Ibrahim in
partnership with
mugwumpin
“Once
upon a time Khidr, the
Teacher of Moses, called
upon mankind with a
warning.
At a certain
date, he said, all the
water in the world which
had not been specially
hoarded would disappear.
It would then be
renewed with different
water, which would drive
men mad.
Only one man listened to
the meaning of this
advice.
He collected
water and went to a
secure place where he
stored it, and waited
for the water to change
its character…”
So
begins the brief,
evocative fable from
which mugwumpin and
Golden Thread will draw
for the creation of this
newest piece, written by
Denmo Ibrahim and
directed by Christopher
W. White, mugwumpin’s
cofounders.
From the fable’s
fertile ground we will
cultivate questions
ranging from the
personal to cultural to
environmental.
Water is life.
Water is memory.
Water constitutes
75% of who we are.
What happens when
water changes?
The
play will be developed
by an ensemble of
players who actively
participate in the
creation and performance
of this piece, in the
unique collaborative
style that is visceral,
mind-bending work.
The process will
unfold in two phases: a
development phase in
which the writer and
director will work with
the ensemble to explore
themes, images, bits of
text, music, and other
raw materials that will
be shaped through the
writing of the play; and
a rehearsal/performance
phase in which the draft
script will be
developed, prodded, and
molded through active
play and dialogue
between the writer and
ensemble.
