New play development and commissions
Kimia is the desired product of the alchemical process.
Launched in 2006, the goal of the program is to initiate collaborations and commissions and to develop new play projects culminating in a fully staged production. Kimia includes the discovery and development of emerging playwrights as well as identifying established artists for collaboration and commissioning. The program aims to actively generate new work about and or by artists from the Middle East for the American stage.
To this end, Golden Thread is currently involved in three major new play development projects:
- Benedictus, an ambitious international collaboration among artists from Iran, Israel, and the United States, opening in October 2007
- Water Under Bridge, a new play based on a 9th century Sufi tale called When the Waters Were Changed, commissioned to Denmo Ibrahim with Mugwampin, scheduled for 2008.
- The Ta’zieh Project, scheduled to open in 2009. Golden Thread Productions and playwright Torange Yeghiazarian , poet Haleh Hatami, and dramaturg Roberta Levitow, Lead Artists in a seven-member group of Middle Eastern Artists, propose to create is an interdisciplinary multi-media performance piece exploring Ta’zieh (an ancient and uniquely Iranian passion play that reenacts the martyrdom of Hussain, grandson of the prophet Muhammad) and its contemporary reflections in our life.
